Speaker A:Do you know how the legislative branch of Ohio's government is structured? If not, this video is for you. Let's dive in Ohio State government, like the US Government, has three branches.
They are the Executive Branch, headed by the Governor of Ohio and five other statewide elected the Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Treasurer and the Auditor. The Executive branch is responsible for enforcing Ohio's laws.
Then there's the Judicial Branch, headed by the Chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, which is responsible for interpreting Ohio's laws.
And finally, the Legislative Branch, headed by the President of the Ohio Senate and the speaker of Ohio's House of Representatives, which is responsible for making Ohio's laws. Today I'd like to explain the legislative branch of Ohio's state government in more detail.

The:The Ohio General assembly is comprised of two chambers, the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives, often shortened to Ohio Senate and Ohio House or just Senate and House. These are the deliberative bodies of Ohio state government, meaning they debate, argue and negotiate to make Ohio laws.
The Ohio Senate and the Ohio House meet for every General assembly at Ohio State Capitol, also called the State House in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Don't confuse Ohio's Senate and House with those at the federal level in Washington, dc.
When someone in Ohio refers to their Senator, you might want to ask them if they're referring to their Senator in Washington or Columbus. The same goes for their Representative or what's also referred to as their House member. The Ohio Senate has 33 members who serve four year terms.
They are referred to as Ohio Senators or simply Senators. The Ohio House has 99 members who serve two year terms. They can be referred to as Members or Representatives, so don't let this confuse you.
Ohio Senators and Ohio House members serve constituents in their districts. THE There are 33 Senate districts and 99 House districts in Ohio. Each Ohio Senate district is comprised of three Ohio House districts.
entatives election will be in:In even numbered years, Ohio Senate Elections occur in two classes. Seventeen members are elected with one Ohio House election and 16 are elected with the next House election.
This system creates staggered terms for the Ohio Senate. Ohio has a form of term limits. Ohio Senators are limited to serving two consecutive terms totaling eight years.
Ohio House members are limited to serving four consecutive terms totaling eight years. However, Ohio has no lifetime limits on terms.
Senators who have termed out can run for the Ohio House and termed out House members can run for the Ohio Senate.
A Senator or House member can also sit out one term and be reelected to the same body, meaning a Senator would have to sit out four years and a House member two. All of these situations happen quite frequently, which is why Ohio is known for its musical chairs or revolving door term limits.
